In my research paper, I investigated the socio-political factors that led to the Circassian genocide, focusing on the role of Tsar Alexander II’s abolition of serfdom in 1861. The paper connects the aftermath of the Crimean War with the mass deportation of Circassians to the Ottoman Empire.

This research holds personal significance for me, as my 3rd great-grandfather fought against the Russian army in Circassia and faced the tragic consequences of genocide and displacement. His teenage sons were forced to flee their homeland on horseback one night, never to return or see their parents again.

This exploration not only deepened my understanding of my family’s history but also fueled my passion for studying politics and international relations.
